James Hyde, regarding William's desire to be admitted into the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, to which his father had belonged. Copy of a speech given by Gen. Strong at an 1880 Cincinnati banquet of the Society of Ex-Army and Navy Officers of which his friend Gen. Hickenlooper was President, and a copy of a speech given celebrating his friend, General Sheridan. Memorial pamphlets and news clippings about General Strong's death.

Civil war soldier who helped raise the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry in April 1861, was later assigned to duty with General William B. McPherson, and served at the Siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's march to the sea, breveted Brigadier General in 1865. Friends with Captain Andrew Hickenlooper, chief of artillery, of the Army of the Tennessee, whom he calls "my hero".
